Returns

Every book sold by Maison Kahn can be returned at any time, for any reason. We will buy it back at a fair price. This is not a rental. When you purchase a book, you own it.

How the Return Price Works

The return price is based on two factors.

A usage cost, based on how long you held the book:

Holding PeriodUsage Cost
Within 30 days5%
1–6 months10%
6–12 months15%
Over 12 months20% (cap — never higher)

A condition adjustment, based on the book's condition when it comes home compared to when it left. We use standard antiquarian grading: Fine, Near Fine, Very Good, Good, Fair. If the book returns in the same condition, the only deduction is the usage cost.

We do not charge penalties. We do not send invoices for damage. We offer you the fair price for the book as it is, minus the usage cost. If you accept, we buy it back. If you'd rather keep it, keep it.

Books appreciate. So yes, if your book goes up in value above your initial purchase price (less usage cost), you could make money by returning it.

What This Looks Like

You buy the Folio Society Armitage Sir Gawain for $57. You read it over six months. The slipcase has a small scuff from sitting on your nightstand. You bring it back.

We deduct the 10% usage cost ($5.70) and adjust for the scuff — Fine to Near Fine. Your return price is approximately $48–50. You read a beautiful edition of the greatest English medieval poem for six months, and it cost you less than a dinner.

To Return a Book

Email jeff@maisonkahn.com with the book's title and your original order number. We'll send a prepaid shipping label within 24 hours. When the book arrives, we grade it and send you an offer within 48 hours. If you accept, payment goes out the same day.

The Provenance Card

When a book comes home, its provenance card is updated with the return date and the condition at return. When it goes back out to the next reader, the card travels with it. Over time, the card accumulates a history — every reader, every journey. The book gets richer, not diminished.
